Dear Sonoma State Community,

On Friday, we came together to mark the beginning of a new academic year and celebrate the community that makes Sonoma State such a special place.

At the Fall 2026 Kickoff, we also launched "Think Outside the Box," a new opportunity for our community to share ideas, aspirations, and possibilities for Sonoma State's future.

The idea is simple: great ideas can come from anywhere.

Our future will be shaped by the creativity, experience, perspectives, and commitment of people across our entire community. "Think Outside the Box" is one way to ensure their voices are heard, inviting all of us to imagine what is possible.

Throughout the morning, students, faculty, and staff added their ideas to our interactive installation. It was exciting to watch the installation begin to disappear beneath Post-it notes representing the hopes, ideas, and possibilities of our community.

But Friday's event was only the beginning.

Whether you joined us on Friday or weren't able to attend, I invite you to be part of the conversation. Visit Think Outside the Box to share what possibility excites you most for Sonoma State. Share one idea or several -- there are no limits outside the box.

In the weeks and months ahead, we'll continue sharing ideas and themes that emerge from the conversation and will look for opportunities to connect them with the work happening across the university.

Thank you for everything you do for our students, for one another, and for Sonoma State. I am excited about what lies ahead and the possibilities we will create together.

Let's keep thinking differently, imagining what's possible, and building our next chapter together.

Warmly,

Dear Campus Community:

Read statements about our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and anti-oppression from other members of the Sonoma State University community.

Good day, Seawolf Community,

The grass is defiant,

Even through ashes, rising…

Roots go deep…

We lift up our feet …

Lift up our faces

To the blue air,

To the spacious hearts,

To the unknown springs of our souls,

Oct. 2, 2017

Dear Campus Community,

We are saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at the Route 91 Music Festival in Las Vegas last night. We have learned that a handful of Sonoma State students were at the concert. One SSU student was injured, but thankfully she is recovering and in stable condition. Our hearts go out to her, as well as her family and friends.

Dear Campus Community,

Our return to Sonoma State for the 2020 – 2021 academic year has coincided with two unprecedented events: the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the devastation of several, simultaneous wildfires of incredible magnitude.

Our Caring Community:

Just a week ago, our nation was saddened once again by a school shooting that claimed 17 lives in Florida. Words cannot adequately express the feelings that we experienced as we learned of this horror. The shootings bring renewed awareness of the urgency to address mental health needs and gun control policies. Our thoughts and hearts are with all those impacted by this tragedy.

Campus community,

Sonoma State is committed to continuing to educate our students through this semester even as we navigate the shelter-in-place and other public health orders emerging during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Given this rapidly changing environment, we have made two major decisions today to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff:

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, and Friends,

Since the early morning hours of Oct. 9, our community has been tested by the unprecedented challenges of the fires that have struck our communities.

Members of the Sonoma State Campus Community,

I write today with a heavy heart. On Nov. 2, two of our staff members discovered a body in a heavily wooded area near parking lot M on the edge of campus. We never know exactly what each of our work days will be like, but I am certain that our colleagues never expected that. My appreciation to them for their diligence and handling of a difficult situation.
